Field Recordings, Vol. 1 is a thirty-track collection by Charley Crockett, released digitally on 3 April 2020 on Son of Davy. Crockett and his friend Kyle Madrigal made the recordings over the preceding year at Madrigal’s farm in Mendocino County, California, where Crockett had earlier recorded his 2015 debut album, A Stolen Jewel. Crockett has described the setup: the two went in on a four-track recorder, Madrigal set it up at the farm, and whenever Crockett came through he would lay down whatever songs he could think of. Madrigal recorded everything on an old CB radio microphone and an old rotary telephone taped together.

Crockett said the songs came from his street-performing repertoire and folk tunes, along with songs he had written that might not suit his studio albums. The list includes “Little Birdie,” “Short Life of Trouble,” “Banjo Pickin’ Man,” “Lost in the Lonesome Pines” and “Downbound Train,” and three takes of “Misery, Trouble & Heartache” (a major waltz, a minor waltz and a 4/4 version). Crockett told the Austin Chronicle he had wanted to make something along the lines of a Smithsonian Folkways record, and that with people stuck at home in April 2020 the informal, itinerant feel of the songs seemed to suit the moment.
