Field Recordings Vol. 1, released April 3, 2020 on Son of Davy, is a pandemic-era demos collection by Texas singer-songwriter Charley Crockett. The thirty-track, sixty-eight-minute set strips Crockett's country-blues storytelling down to voice and acoustic guitar, with Kyle Madrigal adding guitar, washtub bass, harmonica, banjo, and backing vocals. The result is an audio sketchbook of cutting-room-floor songs from Crockett's prolific Texas writing process — the first volume in what became an ongoing series. The record sits outside bluegrass proper but its old-weird-American repertoire and stripped-acoustic delivery have crossed over into roots and stringband circles, and Crockett himself has become an unlikely Americana presence at festivals long dominated by bluegrass.
