First Time Around is an LP by Lost & Found, released on Outlet (STLP 1002) in 1975. The band took shape in 1973: banjoist Gene Parker later recalled that he suggested to Allen Mills, who was then playing in a country band, that the two find other players for bluegrass, and he brought in the mandolinist Dempsey Young, who in turn had been playing with the guitarist Roger Handy.

That is the lineup on the record: Roger Handy on guitar, Gene Parker on banjo, Dempsey Young on mandolin and Allen Mills on bass, with Mills singing lead on several songs, and Handy and Parker on others. Parker recalled that Mills started writing songs for the band, beginning with “Brown Hill,” and then wrote “Love of the Mountains” shortly afterward; both are on this album. The twelve tracks also include “If Today Was the Last Day,” “You Ain’t Going Nowhere,” “Bringing Mary Home,” “Bed of Roses,” “Daisy a Day” and two instrumentals, “Sunny Mt. Chimes” and “Dempsey’s Run.” Mills said the band were area musicians until he approached Dave Freeman of Rebel Records; Lost & Found went on to record for Rebel in the 1980s.
