Flashback cover

Flashback by J.D. Crowe and the New South, released in 1994, revisits the material and spirit of the landmark 1975 New South album that helped define progressive bluegrass for a generation. That earlier record — featuring Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas, and Bobby Slone — had introduced a harder-edged, more harmonically adventurous bluegrass to listeners who had grown up on country rock. This reunion record includes "Long Journey Home" and reunites key personnel to reassess what that music meant and where it had gone. Crowe's banjo playing, always distinguished by its rhythmic solidity and tonal clarity, anchors the ensemble. Flashback is both a historical document and a live argument that the approach pioneered nearly two decades earlier had lost none of its vitality.
