Flatpick is a 2006 compilation on Rural Rhythm/Sierra Records (SZCD 6026), drawing on sessions spanning 1964 to 1973—nearly the whole of Clarence White's brief, luminous career. The core material comes from spring 1964, recorded weeks after the landmark Appalachian Swing! sessions with the Kentucky Colonels: White on lead guitar alongside Roland White (mandolin), Billy Ray Latham (banjo), and Roger Bush (bass). Later tracks draw from a 1970 duo session with Bush and a 1973 Wally Heider Studios date adding Byron Berline, Herb Pedersen, and Alan Munde. All material predates White's Byrds tenure or captures him in its final months; he died in a traffic accident in July 1973. The album stands as the definitive showcase of his acoustic career and the work that made the guitar a lead instrument in bluegrass.
