Flatpick is a collection of Clarence White’s acoustic guitar recordings that Sierra Records assembled, first issued in 2006 through Rural Rhythm. Its core is seventeen tracks recorded in April 1964, with his brother Roland White on mandolin and Sandy Rothman on rhythm guitar, taped by Brooks Adams Otis. They are mostly fiddle tunes and old standards: “John Henry Blues,” “Salt Creek,” “Durham’s Reel,” “Ragtime Annie,” “Sheik of Araby” and “San Antonio Rose.” Two later pieces close the disc. “Laughing Guitar” was recorded in May 1967. “Alabama Jubilee” is from June 1973, produced by Jim Dickson, with Byron Berline on fiddle, Alan Munde on banjo, Roland White on mandolin, Herb Pedersen on rhythm guitar, Roger Bush on slap bass, Leland Sklar on electric bass and Ed Greene on drums.

The 2013 “Collector’s Extended Edition” (Sierra SZCD 6026), produced by John Delgatto, adds a second disc. It has a June 1970 stereo session with Roger Bush, three pieces from a 1964 guitar instruction tape, “Moonlight Waltz” and “Old Joe Clark” recorded live at the Ash Grove in the spring of 1973, and “Lost Highway” from a demo session in March 1973. By then White had spent nearly five years in the Byrds, which Roger McGuinn broke up in February 1973. On 15 July of that year White was struck and killed by a drunk driver in Palmdale, California, while loading equipment after a White Brothers show.
