Fly the River is a CD by Furnace Mountain, a Virginia string band that has been together since 1995. It was issued on Shepherds Ford Records and has eleven tracks, among them “Blackjack Grove,” “Love Is Pleasing,” “Rain and Snow,” “Duck River,” “Railroad Boy,” “Booze Fighter” and, last, “Dink’s Song.” The band is Aimee Curl on bass and vocals, Danny Knicely on mandolin and guitar, Morgan Morrison on guitar, bouzouki and vocals, and Dave Van Deventer on fiddle. On “Dink’s Song” Curl sings the lead with Morrison on harmony, Knicely plays mandolin and Van Deventer fiddle.
Furnace Mountain plays music from the Appalachian traditions along with original compositions, and it is the host band of the Watermelon Pickers’ Festival on the banks of the Shenandoah River.
