"Fly the River," released in September 2006 as a self-produced recording, is the best-known album by Furnace Mountain — a Shenandoah Valley, Virginia roots quartet featuring Aimee Curl (vocals, fiddle), Danny Knicely (guitar, vocals), Morgan Morrison, and Dave Van Deventer. The band occupies the intersection of Appalachian old-time fiddle tradition and Celtic folk, drawing on the string-band and mountain music of the upper South — adjacent to but distinct from bluegrass. Knicely, with a strong reputation in the old-time and contra-dance communities, grounds the sound in deep Virginia mountain tradition, while Curl's fiddle and vocals give the record its lyrical center. The album is a document of the living Appalachian string tradition from the region that gave rise to it.
