Folk Concert, recorded live in 1963 at Antioch College in Ohio, is one of the most important documents of the Stanley Brothers in the context of the folk revival. Carter and Ralph Stanley, accompanied by the Clinch Mountain Boys, perform pieces reaching back to the oldest layers of Appalachian tradition: 'Little Birdie,' 'Pig in a Pen,' and 'Hills of Roan County' are drawn from a repertoire that predates the commercial recording era. The college concert setting represented a significant meeting point between an older rural tradition and a younger educated audience discovering mountain music. The Stanleys approach the material without self-consciousness, giving the recording an authenticity that more explicitly revival-oriented projects sometimes lack.
