Folk Singer, Vol. 1 is a 2014 album released by Willie Watson on Acony Records (ACNY-1411), the debut solo release of the Old Crow Medicine Show founding member. Watson (guitar, banjo, vocals) performs ten traditional and obscure folk songs in a radically stripped-back setting: recorded on analog tape at Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, produced by David Rawlings, with no other credited performing musicians. The approach—bare voice, guitar, and banjo—sets Watson's high, clear delivery against an almost archaic acoustic backdrop and reflects his deep affinity for pre-commercial American folk material. Note: the catalog personnel lists Paul Knight, who does not appear in the credited lineup for this recording.
