Foothills is a 1999 Pinecastle Records debut album (PRC-1090) by Jeff Autry, a bluegrass flatpick guitarist who had worked with the Lynn Morris Band and appeared on numerous Pinecastle instrumental recordings. The album draws on an all-star ensemble: Larry Stephenson on mandolin and vocals, Kristin Scott Benson on banjo — then a member of the Larry Stephenson Band and later a seven-time IBMA Banjo Player of the Year — Randy Kohrs on dobro, and Mickey Harris on fiddle. Additional guests include Russell Moore, Wayne Benson, Scott Vestal, Mark Schatz, and Sam Bush. The primarily instrumental program, with select vocal tracks, presents Autry as a restrained, precise flatpick stylist capable of leading a full bluegrass ensemble with understated authority.
