Glamour & Grits, released by Sugar Hill on April 23, 1996, captures Sam Bush at the peak of his newgrass mandolin playing — solidly rooted in the contemporary bluegrass tradition but constantly pushing at the edges. The program ranges from grassroots folk to what Bush called "electri-Celtic fusion," supported by a deep cast including Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Al Kooper, and old New Grass Revival bandmate John Cowan. Highlights include the hook-laden Same Ol' River, the slide-mandolin showcase Watson Allman, a unique reading of Ol' Joe Clark, and the closing Irish rocker (One Night in Old) Galway, with Bush and Fleck trading licks on electric mandolin and electric banjo.
