“Brilliancy” is a fiddle showpiece associated with the Texas fiddler Eck Robertson, who made some of the earliest country recordings. Robertson recorded it as part of his “Brilliancy Medley,” an arrangement stitched together from several older fiddle tunes and released around 1930.
A dazzling, fast piece built to display a fiddler’s skill, “Brilliancy” was, by some accounts, Robertson’s own name for a set of variations he developed. It carries the elaborate, virtuosic strain of the Texas contest-fiddle tradition.
The tune has remained a test piece for ambitious fiddlers.
