Gospel Echoes of the Stanley Brothers cover

Gospel Echoes of the Stanley Brothers was recorded by Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys at Jessup Recording Studios in Jackson, Michigan, in the autumn of 1971, and was released in 1973 as Jessup MB 129. Its twelve songs are mostly ones the Stanley Brothers had recorded: “Wings of Angels,” “The White Dove,” “Working on a Building,” “A Few More Seasons,” “The Darkest Hour Is Just Before Dawn,” “My Main Trial Is Yet to Come,” “Old Daniel Prayed” and “Let Me Walk, Lord, by Your Side.” Ralph’s brother Carter had died in 1966.

The band on the session was Ralph Stanley on banjo, Roy Lee Centers and Keith Whitley on guitars, Ricky Skaggs on mandolin and fiddle, Curly Ray Cline on fiddle and Jack Cooke on bass. Ralph Stanley had hired Skaggs and Whitley when they were about sixteen or seventeen, after finding them holding the crowd at one of his shows. The same group made another Jessup LP, Sing Michigan Bluegrass (MB 108), in 1971, and both albums were reissued on a 2001 Varese CD, Echoes of the Stanley Brothers.
