Grandpa’s Mandolin

IIIrd Tyme Out

Album · 1994 · Rebel REB-CS 1713

Grandpa’s Mandolin was IIIrd Tyme Out’s third album and was released by Rebel in 1993 (CD REB-CD 1713, cassette REB-C 1713). The band recorded it on 17–20 and 24 May 1993 and mixed it on 25 and 26 May, with Bil VornDick as engineer and co-producer alongside the band. BGD gives the studio as Music Row Audio in Nashville. Gary B. Reid coordinated the production.

The lineup was Russell Moore on guitar and lead vocals, Barry Abernathy on banjo, Wayne Benson on mandolin, Mike Hartgrove on fiddle and Ray Deaton on electric bass, with Kenny Malone adding drums on the title track. Of the twelve tracks, Moore sings lead on most, with Deaton or Benson on tenor in the trios; “Little Black Train” gives each of the four singers a verse, with Abernathy, Benson, Moore and Deaton taking turns on lead.
