Grateful Dead (Skull and Roses)

The Grateful Dead

Album · 1971

The Grateful Dead's self-titled live double album—universally known as Skull and Roses after Rick Griffin's cover art—released on Warner Bros. Records (2WS 1935) in October 1971, was the band's first RIAA gold-certified record. Jerry Garcia plays guitar and sings; Bob Weir, guitar and vocals; Phil Lesh, bass and vocals; Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, keyboards, harmonica, and vocals; Bill Kreutzmann, drums. Recorded at the Manhattan Center, Fillmore East, and Fillmore West in spring 1971. Note: catalog personnel includes Mickey Hart—who had departed the band in February 1971 and does not appear on this recording. The album's bluegrass and roots connection is anchored in Pigpen's blues-rooted vocal style and Garcia's country-inflected guitar phrasing, developed from his early banjo and folk picking.
