Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs (Columbia CL 1349, 1959) is the landmark fifth studio album by Marty Robbins, recorded in a single eight-hour session on April 7, 1959, with guitarist Grady Martin, bassist Bob Moore, drummer Louis Dunn, and vocal backing from Tompall and the Glaser Brothers, produced by Don Law. The album spawned "El Paso," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and won the Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording in 1961. Certified platinum and selected for the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2017, it has been called the single most influential album of Western songs in post–World War II American music. Though rooted in the cowboy and Western tradition rather than bluegrass, it remains essential to any acoustic American roots catalog.
