Hampton Comes Alive

Phish

Album · 1999 · Elektra 62495-2

Hampton Comes Alive (Elektra 62495-2) was released on 23 November 1999 as a six-disc set of two complete Phish concerts, recorded at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia, on 20 and 21 November 1998. It was the first time the band had released whole concerts, and its third live album. Trey Anastasio plays guitar, Page McConnell keyboards, Mike Gordon bass and Jon Fishman drums, and all four sing. The RIAA certified it gold on 14 January 2000, and it was nominated for a Grammy for Best Boxed Set Packaging. Ten songs, including “Tube,” “Driver,” “Axilla I,” “Possum,” “Piper” and “Farmhouse,” appeared on an official Phish release for the first time.

The bluegrass link is “Nellie Kane,” on the fifth disc, with Mike Gordon singing lead. Tim O’Brien wrote the song, and Hot Rize recorded it in January 1979 at Colorado Sound in Denver for their Flying Fish LP Hot Rize (FF 206), with O’Brien singing lead and Nick Forster on harmony, alongside Charles Sawtell on guitar and Pete Wernick on banjo.
