Hell on Church Street, The Punch Brothers' 2022 release, is the quintet's full-length interpretation of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli's 1949 recording of Bach's Violin Concerto in E major, recast as an original Punch Brothers composition and performed in its entirety alongside the Django recording. The project extends Chris Thile and the group's long engagement with classical counterpoint, jazz ensemble thinking, and acoustic string performance. The Punch Brothers had by this point established themselves as the most technically demanding and intellectually ambitious group working at the intersection of bluegrass instrumentation and composed music. Hell on Church Street makes an argument, through performance rather than assertion, about what acoustic American ensemble music can absorb and transform.
