Gabe Witcher
Gabe Witcher is a California-born fiddler, singer, and producer who launched his performing career on the Strawberry Music Festival stage at age six with Bill Monroe, anchored Punch Brothers for approximately seventeen years, and is one of Nashville and Los Angeles's busiest first-call session string players.
- Born Gabriel Witcher on June 11, 1978; received his first violin for his fifth birthday.
- At age six in 1984, was invited on stage by Bill Monroe at the Strawberry Music Festival in Yosemite — the launch of his performing career.
- Anchored the family group The Witcher Brothers, which toured the southwestern U.S. for roughly 25 years.
- Joined Jerry Douglas's band in 2002 and remained until co-founding the group (later named Punch Brothers) in 2006 with Chris Thile, Chris Eldridge, Noam Pikelny, and original bassist Greg Garrison; Paul Kowert joined on bass in late 2008.
- Won the 2019 Grammy for Best Folk Album with Punch Brothers ("All Ashore"); ten total Grammy nominations across performing and producing roles.
- First-call session fiddler and producer for Paul Simon, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, T Bone Burnett, Randy Newman, the Coen Brothers, and Sara Bareilles.
- Named an Affiliate Scholar of Oberlin Conservatory (2014) and began composing symphonic works that year.
- Departed Punch Brothers in June 2023; replaced by Brittany Haas. Continues solo and production work from Los Angeles.
