The Punch Brothers with Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings

Punch Brothers, the string band Chris Thile formed in 2006 with Chris Eldridge on guitar, Noam Pikelny on banjo, Gabe Witcher on fiddle and, from 2008, Paul Kowert on bass, were Nonesuch artists who had backed Stark Sands and Oscar Isaac on the film’s soundtrack, and they play on eight of the album’s thirty tracks, also accompanying the Secret Sisters, Isaac and Marcus Mumford. Welch and Rawlings, who have recorded as a two-guitar duo since Welch’s Revival in 1996, followed “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” with “The Midnight Special” and “I Hear Them All” and “This Land Is Your Land” with Willie Watson, and later joined Conor Oberst on “Man Named Truth.”

The evening was filmed for a Showtime documentary, and the album, produced by the Coen brothers with T Bone Burnett, who had produced the film’s music, runs to thirty performances by artists including Joan Baez, Elvis Costello, Jack White, the Avett Brothers, Rhiannon Giddens and the Milk Carton Kids.
