Hold to a Dream, released by Capitol Records in 1987, found New Grass Revival reaching for mainstream country radio in the configuration of Sam Bush, John Cowan, Béla Fleck, and Pat Flynn — the lineup that would close the band's career. The album yielded the band's two highest country-chart singles, Unconditional Love and Can't Stop Now, both peaking in the mid-40s on the Billboard country chart. The program leaned into the polished production country radio expected while keeping the band's instrumental virtuosity at the center, with one of the album's most ambitious instrumentals revisiting Fleck's Metric Lips. It would be New Grass's penultimate album; the group would dissolve in 1989 with each member moving to influential solo and band projects.
