Home in Sulphur Springs (Rounder 0012) was released in 1972 and is Norman Blake’s first album under his own name. It was recorded on 30 December 1971 at Glaser Sound Studios in Nashville and produced by Blake and Tut Taylor. Blake plays guitar and mandolin and Taylor plays Dobro; no one else is credited.

Blake was born in north Georgia and had worked through the later 1960s as a Nashville session player, including on Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline. In 1971 he played in John Hartford’s Aereo-Plain band with Taylor and added Dobro to seven tracks of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Will the Circle Be Unbroken. According to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, his first solo performance came in 1972.

Fifteen tracks mix Blake’s own writing with older material. Blake wrote “Randall Collins,” “Ginseng Sullivan,” “Down Home Summertime Blues,” “Crossing No. 9” and the instrumentals “Warp Factor No. 9” and “Richland Avenue Rag.” The traditional pieces include “Bully of the Town,” “Cattle in the Cane” and “Done Gone,” and the album ends with “Bringing in the Georgia Mail,” credited to Charlie Monroe.
