"I Heard the Angels Singing," released in 1989 on Sugar Hill Records (SH-3774), is a pure gospel album by Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, featuring one of the ensemble's most celebrated vocal lineups: Russell Moore (guitar, lead vocals), Jim Mills (banjo, vocals), and Ray Deaton (bass, vocals) alongside Lawson on mandolin. Moore left Quicksilver two years later to found IIIrd Tyme Out; "The Little Mountain Church House," which appears here, won IBMA Song of the Year in 1991 at the time of his departure. The album is widely regarded as a high-water mark of Lawson's gospel recordings and a defining document of the lineup that shaped a generation of bluegrass harmony singing. Note: personnel cache lists "Jimmy Stewart" for banjo — the banjo player on this album is Jim Mills.
