I'm Going Back to Old Kentucky, released in 2011 on Rebel Records, documents Audie Blaylock and Redline at the heart of their signature neo-traditional sound. Blaylock, a banjo player who came up playing with Ricky Skaggs and later fronted his own bands, built Redline around close harmony vocals and hard-driving instrumentation that placed the group squarely in the lineage of Ralph Stanley and the Johnson Mountain Boys. The album is notable for its uncompromising commitment to acoustic simplicity and high mountain lonesome feeling, avoiding the production slickness that characterized much contemporary bluegrass. Blaylock's baritone anchors the vocal blend while the ensemble maintains the rhythmic propulsion and tonal brightness associated with the classic Virginia bluegrass tradition.
