In the Life (Rounder 11661-0542-2, 2004) is Open Road's second Rounder album, featuring a refreshed lineup of Bradford Lee Folk (guitar, lead vocals), Caleb Roberts (mandolin), Keith Reed (banjo), Bobby Britt (fiddle), and Eric Thorin (bass). The 13-song program spans Louvin Brothers repertoire, George Jones covers, and originals including Reed's "Cheyenne Mountain Breakdown." Producer Sally Van Meter maintained the band's hard-driving acoustic aesthetic while showcasing their growing original songwriting. The album climbed the national Bluegrass chart and earned the band Denver Westword's recognition as Best Bluegrass Band, cementing Open Road's reputation as one of the leading Colorado-based bluegrass outfits of the early 2000s.
