Instant Lonesome and the Twinkle Brigade

Jody Stecher and Mile Twelve

Album · 2024 · Don Giovanni CD-DG-304

Instant Lonesome and the Twinkle Brigade is a 2024 album by Jody Stecher with the Boston bluegrass band Mile Twelve, released on 6 September 2024 by Don Giovanni Records (CD-DG-304). Stecher recorded it in February 2024, a second album with the band after Mile 77, which Don Giovanni issued in December 2023. The title plays on the nickname “Instant Lonesome,” which Bluegrass Unlimited founder Pete Kuykendall gave him for his emotional singing.

Stecher wrote nine of the 14 tracks. The others are four traditional pieces — “Shelvin’ Rock,” “Little Black Train,” “Fare Thee Well Cold Winter” and “Harvey Logan” — and “Young Widow Brown,” credited to Sky Corbin and Waylon Jennings. Across the album the subjects include domestic contentment and its opposite, lawless rural life in earlier times, war, political folly, an outlaw, a supernatural train, an expanding waistline and a femme fatale. The last track is “The Fifty-Fifty Rag.”
