Instrumentals (Skaggs Family Records SKFR-1007, 2006) is an all-instrumental studio album from Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, a departure from the vocal bluegrass and country material that defined the band's catalog through the 2000s. Skaggs plays mandolin, guitar, banjo, and mandocello throughout; Cody Kilby plays rhythm guitar; Andy Leftwich plays fiddle; Jim Mills plays banjo; and Mark Fain holds the bass. Guest contributors include Jeff Taylor on accordion and penny whistle and Andy Statman on clarinet. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album at the 2007 ceremony. The twelve tracks range from driving bluegrass breakdowns to reflective melodic pieces, reflecting years of touring experience and Skaggs' lifelong engagement with the instrumental tradition — from his teenage work with Ralph Stanley through his long tenure as one of Nashville's most versatile acoustic musicians.
