It's a Cold Cold World, released by Webco Records in 1989, was James King's second solo album after his 1985 Wango debut Introducing James King and his work with Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys. The album showcases the crystal-clear hard-bluegrass lead voice that would become King's signature — though the instrumental work hadn't yet reached the polish of his later Rounder-era releases. King would sign with Rounder in the 1990s and become one of the most respected traditional-leaning bluegrass singers of his generation. The Webco album was later reissued as Webco Classics, Volume Two, and stands as an early document of a major bluegrass voice in development.
