January Rain (Rebel REB 1702, 1992) documents Lost & Found at a transitional moment, recording with the newly solidified lineup of Allen Mills (bass, lead vocals), Dempsey Young (mandolin, vocals), Barry Berrier (guitar, vocals), and Lynwood Lunsford (banjo, vocals). Berrier and Lunsford had joined around 1991, giving the veteran Virginia band a second wind after the departure of founding guitarist Roger Handy. Lunsford's banjo work — praised for its rhythmic precision alongside Dempsey Young's first-rank mandolin — would anchor the group through the mid-1990s. Recorded at River Track Studio in Louisa, Kentucky, the album's program of original material and traditional repertoire exemplifies the straight-ahead hard-country bluegrass that kept Lost & Found a festival and college-circuit staple nearly two decades into their career.
