Jubilation cover

Jubilation (Billy Blue Records BBR 0059) was released on 7 October 2022 and follows Appalachian Road Show’s Tribulation. The band is Barry Abernathy on banjo, Jim VanCleve on fiddle, Zeb Snyder on guitar, Darrell Webb on mandolin and Todd Phillips on bass, all five singing. Its press materials describe the record as a response to the pandemic years, a “light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel” album about the endurance of Appalachian people. It opens with “In Time, Jubilation,” a spoken introduction narrated by Dolly Parton.

Abernathy and VanCleve wrote “Blue Ridge Mountain Baby” and “Tonight I’ll See You in My Dreams,” and VanCleve wrote “Graveyard Fields.” The rest of the program is made up of traditional pieces arranged by Abernathy, Webb and VanCleve — among them “A Lonesome Road to Travel,” “Hard Times in the Mines,” “Gallows Pole” and “Brother Green” — and songs taken from other repertoires: Pokey LaFarge’s “La La Blues,” Bob Dylan’s “Only a Hobo” and Rick Lang and Tim Stafford’s “Troubled Life.” The band produced the album, with Dottie Leonard Miller and Ed Leonard as executive producers. Tracking was done at The Studio Nashville, with additional recording and mixing by VanCleve at his Third Dawn Studio and mastering at Sterling Sound in Nashville.
