Lady's Fancy (Rounder Records 0099, 1977) is a studio album from flat-pick guitarist Dan Crary with an ensemble drawn from the Southern California acoustic music circle with which Crary was closely associated. Crary plays guitar throughout; Byron Berline plays fiddle; Vince Gill contributes banjo and dobro — trading instruments across different tracks and displaying the precocious versatility that marked his playing before his later rise to country stardom; John Hickman plays banjo; and Joe Villegas holds the bass. The album presents Crary's driving, precise flat-pick style across a range of contexts from fiddle-tune breakdowns to waltzes, and it documents a productive period in California's acoustic scene — a community of players who had absorbed the Tony Rice and Clarence White tradition while developing their own collective idiom.
