“Huckleberry Hornpipe” was composed by the fiddler Byron Berline. It first appeared on the 1973 Country Gazette album “Don’t Give Up Your Day Job,” where Clarence White’s guitar solo helped make it a flatpicker’s favorite.
A three-part breakdown, the tune moves at a fast clip and offers plenty of room for chromatic runs and Texas-style turns. Its mix of drive and intricacy made it a standard among bluegrass fiddlers and guitarists alike.
The tune is a familiar test piece at jams and contests. The version heard here is by the guitarist Dan Crary.
