Last Train to Kitty Hawk

Balsam Range

Album · 2009

Last Train to Kitty Hawk (Mountain Home Records, 2009) is a Balsam Range album from the western North Carolina quintet — the title track reaching number one on the Bluegrass Unlimited chart in September 2009 and establishing the band as one of the more significant new outfits in contemporary bluegrass. The core ensemble of Buddy Melton on fiddle and vocals, Marc Pruett on banjo, Caleb Smith on guitar and vocals, Tim Surrett on bass and vocals, and Darren Nicholson on mandolin and vocals drives a program that combines original material with well-chosen repertoire from across the bluegrass tradition. The catalog personnel entry includes additional names — Barry Berrier, Joe Diffie, and Richard Watson — some of which may reflect guest appearances from other Balsam Range recordings that were conflated in data entry; Joe Diffie appeared as a guest on the band's debut Marching Home (2007).
