Laurie Lewis and Her Bluegrass Pals, released in 1999 on Rounder (0461), returned Laurie Lewis to the old-time numbers and traditional bluegrass that were her first love after years of folk and country crossover. Lewis plays fiddle and sings lead, with Tom Rozum on mandolin and vocals, Mary Gibbons on guitar and harmony, Craig Smith on banjo, and Todd Phillips on bass and vocals. The arrangements are anchored by working-band cohesion rather than guest-studded session assemblage. The record came during Lewis's run as a two-time IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year (1992, 1994) and frames her bluegrass identity in the period before her own label Spruce and Maple Music would carry the next phase of her career.
