Leah and Chloe (self-released, 2005) is the debut recording of Rising Appalachia, the project of sisters Leah Smith and Chloe Smith. The album was recorded in Atlanta largely as a gift for family and friends — a modest, informally distributed document — before the scale of audience interest prompted a formal release through CD Baby. The sisters' blend of Appalachian old-time singing, polyrhythmic percussion, and original songwriting rooted in the sounds of the American Southeast was already coherent on the debut, establishing the aesthetic that Rising Appalachia would develop across subsequent recordings. Ben Isaacs and Calvin Durham are listed among the contributing musicians. The album marks the beginning of a career that would grow steadily into one of the more distinctive presences in contemporary roots music.
