Lefty's Old Guitar, released in 2006 on Rounder (11661 0512 2), is J.D. Crowe and the New South's deliberate return to the classic-era band template. Crowe leads on banjo with Rickey Wasson on guitar and lead vocals, Dwight McCall on mandolin, Ron Stewart on fiddle, and Harold Nixon on bass, plus guests Doug Jernigan on steel and Cia Cherryholmes on harmony. The Wasson-McCall low-and-high-tenor blend explicitly evokes the Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs harmonies of the 1970s lineup, and the arrangements draw the band back to that hard-traditional New South sound. The title track honors Lefty Frizzell — a hero of Crowe's teenage years — and the Gibson J-200 Frizzell played, a personal homage to one of Crowe's foundational country influences.
