Life of Sorrow by David Grisman, released on Acoustic Disc in 2003, is a deliberate return to bluegrass roots by a musician who had spent much of his career extending the mandolin into jazz, folk, and the hybrid Dawg Music style he pioneered. Grisman had learned directly from first-generation bluegrass players as a young man, and this album revisits that foundation with the technical command accumulated over four decades of professional playing. The program emphasizes hard-edged traditional material — Stanley Brothers songs, Monroe-style instrumentals, gospel pieces — delivered without the genre-crossing experiments of his more celebrated work. The album is both a musical statement and a personal tribute to the tradition that formed him.
