Live at the Great American Music Hall 1979 is the David Grisman Quintet recorded over two nights, March 5 and 6, 1979, at the San Francisco hall, issued by Grisman's own Acoustic Disc label as a download in 2011 and on CD in 2018. It catches the group weeks after Hot Dawg reached the shops, in the lineup that defined it: David Grisman and Mike Marshall on mandolins, Tony Rice on guitar, Darol Anger on fiddle and Todd Phillips on bass, with Anger and Marshall swapping to cello and mandola for a tune or two. Twenty-seven tracks cover both sets, so the staples ("16/16," "Minor Swing," "Dawg's Rag," "Devlin") appear twice, alongside "Janice," "Neon Tetra," "Dawgology," "Pneumonia" and a run through "Limehouse Blues." It is the fullest document of the first quintet on stage, and the playing is as clean as the studio records.
