Live at W.A.M.

Red Allen and the Kentuckians

Album · 1967 · Storyville SRYP 121153

Live at W.A.M. (Storyville Records SRYP 121153) is a live recording from a configuration of Harley "Red" Allen's ensemble featuring David Grisman, Porter Church, and Bobby Slone, released on the Danish Storyville label that documented American jazz, blues, and folk music for the European collector market. Allen plays guitar and sings; Grisman plays mandolin; Church plays banjo; and Slone holds the bass. Allen, the Harlan County, Kentucky guitarist and vocalist whose singing defined one of bluegrass's most emotionally direct lead voices, led a series of Washington, D.C.-area ensembles in the 1960s that became crucial proving grounds for younger musicians including Grisman. The Storyville release extended the reach of this ensemble to the European acoustic music audience that was tracking American bluegrass with increasing attention during the period.
