Live in Tokyo

J.D. Crowe and the New South

Album · 1979 · Trio PA 6342

Live in Tokyo, released by Japan's Trio Records in 1979 (PA 6342), documents J.D. Crowe and the New South's April 18, 1979 performance at Tokyo's Koseinenkin Hall with the post-classic lineup of Crowe on banjo, Keith Whitley on lead vocals and guitar, Jimmy Gaudreau on mandolin, Bobby Slone now on fiddle, and Steve Bryant on bass. Whitley's lead voice — already moving him toward the country-music stardom he would briefly achieve before his early death — is one of the album's revelations, in fine form on bluegrass standards and the contemporary material Crowe's New South favored. Later reissued by Rounder, the album remains one of the most prized live documents of the late-1970s New South.
