Livin’, Lovin’, Losin’: Songs of the Louvin Brothers is a tribute to Ira and Charlie Louvin, produced by Carl Jackson and released by Universal South on 30 September 2003. The idea came from Ira Louvin’s daughter, Kathy Louvin, who took it to Jackson; he then enlisted the performers. The project was kept secret from Charlie Louvin, the surviving brother, until he heard about it by accident, and he later took part in the sessions.

The sixteen tracks feature guests including Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, James Taylor, Vince Gill, Merle Haggard, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton and Del McCoury. Joe Nichols and Rhonda Vincent sing “Cash on the Barrelhead,” a song the Louvins wrote and first released in 1956 as the B-side of “You’re Running Wild.” The album won the Grammy Award for Best Country Album at the 2004 awards, where James Taylor and Alison Krauss also won Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for “How’s the World Treating You.” It also won the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2004 Recorded Event of the Year award.
