Lonesome Road

Doc and Merle Watson

Album · 1977 · United Artists UA LA 725-G

Lonesome Road, released by United Artists in 1977 (UA-LA725-G), is one of the most varied of the Doc and Merle Watson collaborations — ten tracks ranging across folk-revival ballads (Look Up Look Down That Lonesome Road, I Recall a Gypsy Woman), early-jazz and blues material (Minglewood Blues, My Creole Belle, Mean Mama Blues), country (Blue Railroad Train), and sacred song (Ain't Nobody's Fault but Mine), with Merle's accompaniment framing Doc's flatpicking and warm baritone throughout. The album sits comfortably alongside the Watsons' other late-1970s United Artists records; reissued on CD in 1998 and again in 2002, it remains a fine demonstration of the father-and-son partnership's range.
