Long I Ride (Compass 7 4668 2, released 10 June 2016) marked the 40th anniversary of Special Consensus, the band Greg Cahill co-founded in Chicago in 1975. Alison Brown produced it, and it was recorded at Compass Sound Studio in Nashville. The band on the record is Cahill on banjo, Rick Faris on guitar, Nick Dumas on mandolin and Dan Eubanks on bass; Dumas was new to the group, and he sings lead on “Where the Wild River Rolls,” while Faris sings lead on most of the other vocal tracks.
The title song was written by Robbie Fulks, a former member of the band. Della Mae joined the band on Larry Cordle’s “Highway 40 Blues,” with Celia Woodsmith singing lead; Brown, Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley sit in on the instrumental “Fireball”; Summer McMahan, of Mountain Faith, sings on “First One to Know”; and Buddy Spicher and Matt Combs play twin fiddles on Joe Newberry’s “Baby I’m Blue.” The ten-track album also includes “Jesus Is My Rock,” a traditional piece arranged by the band.
