Lou Reid & Carolina is a 1996 self-titled debut album released on Rebel Records (REB-CD-1728). Reid (guitar, lead vocals)—who had departed Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver to form his own group—leads a strong ensemble featuring Alan Bibey (mandolin, vocals), Gena Britt (banjo, vocals), Randy Barnes (bass, vocals), and Aubrey Haynie (fiddle and viola, guest). Recorded at Doobie Shea Studios in Ferrum, Virginia, the album exemplifies the mid-1990s Rebel sound: clean production, tight vocal harmonies, and instrumental depth provided by some of the genre's most capable younger players. Ronnie Bowman also contributes guest vocals on select tracks, adding an additional layer of vocal texture to the band's debut statement.
