Lovesick and Sorrow

Lovesick and Sorrow is the third album by Ted Lundy, Bob Paisley and the Southern Mountain Boys on Rounder (0107), released in 1978 after The Old Swinging Bridge (Rounder 0020, 1973) and Slipping Away (Rounder 0055, 1976). It was recorded at Bias Studios in Falls Church, Virginia. The band had begun as Ted Lundy and Bob Paisley’s group; the other early members were Fred Hannah and Jerry Lundy, and Bob Paisley’s son Dan and Ted Lundy’s sons T.J. and Bobby joined soon after.

Bob Paisley and Dan Paisley play guitar, Ted Lundy banjo, T.J. Lundy mandolin, Jerry Lundy fiddle and Bill Graybeal bass. Dan Paisley takes the leads and sings harmony, with Bob Paisley and Ted Lundy also singing, and Bobby Hicks adds fiddle on “Grown Old” and “Second Handed Flowers.” The twelve tracks include “Lovesick and Sorrow” (Frank Brown Jr.), Reno and Smiley’s “Unfaithful One,” “Second Handed Flowers” (Tom T. Hall), A.P. Carter’s “Picture on the Wall,” Bob Paisley’s “Grown Old,” and the instrumentals “Sally Ann,” “Old Hickory Cane” and “Rachel.” Bluegrass Unlimited reviewed it in January 1980.
