The Osborne Brothers

Album · 1967 · Decca DL 4903

Modern Sounds of Bluegrass Music was released by Decca in June 1967 (DL 4903), with liner notes by Teddy Wilburn. Its twelve tracks were recorded between October 1965 and March 1967: at Columbia Recording Studio in Nashville in October and November 1965, and at Bradley’s Barn in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, in May and September 1966 and March 1967.

Sonny Osborne plays banjo and Bobby Osborne mandolin on every session, with Lightnin’ Chance or Ronnie Blackwell on bass, Willie Ackerman or Jerry Carrigan on drums and Pig Robbins or Jerry Whitehurst on piano. The vocal trio is the Osbornes with Dale Sledd on the 1965 and May 1966 sessions and with Benny Birchfield on the September 1966 and March 1967 ones; Sledd or Birchfield plays guitar, and Ray Edenton is the second guitarist on eight of the twelve tracks. Pete Wade is listed on dobro on three May 1966 tracks, and Sonny Osborne on five-string dobro on two March 1967 tracks. Buddy Spicher plays fiddle on “One Tear.”

The repertoire includes two Ernest Tubb songs from the March 1967 session, “Walking the Floor Over You” and, with Jimmie Skinner, “Let’s Say Goodbye Like We Said Hello.” “Lonesome Feelin’” is by Billy Henson. Bobby Osborne wrote “Memories,” Judy Osborne wrote “One Tear,” and Bobby and Patsy Osborne wrote “World of Unwanted.”
