Mount Royal is a 2017 Free Dirt Records album (FD-0081) by guitarist Chris Eldridge of the Punch Brothers and acoustic jazz guitar virtuoso Julian Lage, their second duo release. The twelve-track set is primarily instrumental, blending acoustic fingerpicking, bluegrass, traditional folk, and jazz-inflected composition into a sound that draws equally from both players' traditions. Three tracks feature vocals sung by Eldridge. Recorded in a single session, the album documents the musical rapport the two had developed through years of duo performance — Lage's jazz-school vocabulary and Eldridge's bluegrass-rooted flatpick style generating a conversation that neither player could produce alone, and that rewards the kind of close listening more typically associated with chamber music than with acoustic roots recording.
