Mountain Rock, released by Crystal Clear Records in 1978, has a small place in audio history as the first digitally recorded bluegrass and country-rock album — captured direct to digital tape with Soundstream's pioneering equipment. The Dillards by this point had moved through several lineup configurations since their early-1960s bluegrass debut; Mountain Rock features Herb Pedersen among the players, after which Paul York retired from the group. The album mixes the band's progressive instincts with the high standards of audio fidelity its recording method required, and the Dillards' open ear for material outside the bluegrass tradition continued to set them apart from most acts of the era.
