North of the Border

John Reischman

Album · 1993 · Rounder C 0315

North of the Border (Rounder Records C 0315, 1993) is an all-instrumental studio album from Canadian mandolinist John Reischman, who had developed his voice in Bay Area progressive bluegrass circles before establishing himself as a versatile leader in acoustic string music. Reischman plays mandolin throughout; Scott Nygaard plays guitar; Kevin Wimmer contributes fiddle on select tracks; Sally Van Meter plays resonator guitar; and Todd Phillips handles bass. The album's program — original compositions alongside reworkings of folk and traditional material — reflects Reischman's interest in building new music within established acoustic frameworks. North of the Border helped establish the Toronto-based Reischman as a recording artist on his own terms and stands as a valued document of progressive acoustic mandolin music from the early 1990s.
