Not Too Far From the Tree: A Collection of Guitar Duets with Heroes & Friends was released by Sugar Hill (SUG-CD 4001) on March 14, 2006. Bryan Sutton began it in late 2004 with a list of the guitarists who had most influenced his playing. Rather than book a studio, he recorded each of them on location, in their own surroundings, with a minimal portable rig of three microphones feeding an ADAT recorder. The sessions were done without overdubbing, although he edited some takes together.

The fourteen tracks are duets with twelve players: Dan Crary on “Forked Deer,” Norman Blake on “Bully of the Town,” George Shuffler on “The Nine Pound Hammer,” Tony Rice on “Lonesome Fiddle Blues” and “Dusty Miller,” Jack Lawrence on “Stoney Creek,” David Grier on “The Old Spinning Wheel” and “Ragtime Annie,” Russ Barenberg on “Big Sciota,” Doc Watson on “Whiskey Before Breakfast,” Jerry Douglas (on resonator guitar) on “Bonaparte’s Retreat,” Earl Scruggs on “Give Me the Roses” and Ricky Skaggs on “Carroll County Blues.” “Billy in the Lowground,” a duet with his father, Jerry Sutton, is the first song Sutton was taught, recorded in the living room of the house where he grew up. Sutton’s liner notes describe each song, where it was recorded and which guitars were played.
