Old and New, released by Flying Fish Records in 1975 (FF-010), was one of the early Norman Blake records that helped define the small label's identity in its first years. The album features Blake on guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and vocals, with Nancy Blake on viola and bass, Charlie Collins on guitar and fiddle, and Ben Pedigo on banjo. The program ranges from traditional fiddle tunes and old ballads through Blake's original compositions, with the instrumental Miller's Reel and the original Aljimina among the energetic highlights. Blake had spent the early 1970s playing with John Hartford and others; his solo records on Flying Fish established him as one of the most respected acoustic guitarists in the music.
