David "Stringbean" Akeman's Old Time Banjo Pickin' and Singin', released on Starday Records (SLP-142) in 1961, is the Kentucky comedian and banjoist's first LP, recorded in January 1961 at Starday Sound Studio in Nashville. Akeman performs throughout—clawhammer and frailing banjo with vocal—in material including "Keep My Skillet Good and Greasy," "Barnyard Banjo Pickin'," "Georgia Rose," and "Polly." A protégé of Uncle Dave Macon who later received one of Macon's prized banjos, Akeman had played with Bill Monroe (1942–45) before settling at the Opry. The album was released at the height of Scruggs-style picking's commercial dominance; Akeman's archaic frailing style placed the record deliberately in the pre-commercial old-time tradition he inhabited throughout his performing life.
