Old Time Banjo Pickin’ and Singin’ is a 1961 LP by Stringbean, David Akeman, on Starday Records (SLP 142), released in July 1961. It was his first LP for Starday, which signed him in the early 1960s; before that he had not recorded as a solo artist. The LP’s full title adds “With Stringbean the Kentucky Wonder and His Five-String Banjo.”

The fourteen tracks include “Barnyard Banjo Pickin’” and “Birdie,” both instrumentals, and the songs “Keep My Skillet Good and Greasy,” “Georgia Rose,” “Polly,” “20 Cent Cotton and 90 Cent Meat,” “Kentucky and Tennessee,” “Give Me Back My Five Dollars,” “Don’t Bob Your Hair, Girls,” “Forgetting to Forget You” and “Working on a Building.” Akeman had played banjo for Bill Monroe until 1945, and he was a protégé of Uncle Dave Macon, who later gave him one of his prized banjos. He remained known for old-fashioned clawhammer, or frailing, banjo playing.
